Summer Wedding with Brilliant Sunset at Heigh Torr Estate | Purcellville, VA

This early June wedding at Heigh Torr Estate in Purcellville, Virginia landed on one of the hottest days of the summer season so far. The historic stone estate sits against the Short Hill Mountains, with a pool, open field, and a white tent reception space that makes it a popular outdoor wedding venue in Virginia. Getting ready took place inside the main house, which has large windows and a lot of architectural detail, good natural light for photos of the dress and the morning prep.

The bride and groom stand at the center, surrounded by bridesmaids in light blue dresses and groomsmen in blue suits, all smiling. Flowers and greenery line the walkway, adding to the charm of this memorable Purcellville wedding.

Because of the heat, the couple provided white parasols for guests to use during the ceremony, which gave the day a classic summer wedding look paired with light, garden party style outfits. It’s a simple detail, but one that works well for couples planning a summer wedding in a hot climate.

The florals were designed by Windward Blooms, who built a floral arch in oranges, yellows, pinks, and purples for the ceremony, then repurposed those same flowers for the sweetheart table and reception decor later that evening, keeping everything looking fresh despite the heat. Centerpieces featured tall stalks of purple allium, a striking choice for summer wedding florals that stands out from more traditional arrangements.

Cocktail hour was interrupted by a sudden summer storm, a good reminder that outdoor Virginia wedding venues need a solid rain plan even in peak season. Guests moved from the pool area into the tent while the venue team closed everything up and protected the decor, and the storm passed within about thirty minutes. Shout out to Geraldine with Velada Events and Kelsey with the Heigh Torr for managing that quick transition! Once the rain cleared, the reception picked back up with dancing into the night, and a few guests ended up jumping into the pool to cool off. The sunset that evening produced strong golden hour light against the mountain backdrop, a good example of why early June is a strong choice for couples wanting warm, sunny wedding photos in this part of Virginia. The late sunset provide ample time to enjoy all the beautiful daylight!
