Elegant, Spring Wedding at Blackhorse Manor | Warrenton, Virginia

Classic. Elegant. Sentimental. Joyful. Those are the words that come to mind when I think back on Jill and Matt’s March wedding at Blackhorse Manor, and honestly, I could keep going. This was one of those days that had everything: a gorgeous color palette, meaningful tributes to loved ones, live wedding painters for guest portraits, a groom who kept everyone laughing, and a live saxophone player who turned the dance floor into an absolute party.

A Beautiful New Venue (With a Bit of a Plot Twist)

Here’s the thing about Jill and Matt’s wedding day: it almost happened somewhere else entirely. Their original venue took a hit from a late winter snowstorm and ended up with roof damage that made it impossible to host the wedding. If you’ve ever planned an event, you know how gut wrenching that kind of news can be, especially with the big day already on the calendar.

But Jill and Matt didn’t panic. Neither did their planner, the incredible Lucy Donnelly Events. Together they regrouped, got creative, and found their way to Blackhorse Manor, one of the newer properties from The Manors, the same team behind some of the most beloved wedding venues in northern Virginia. What could have been a stressful scramble turned into a beautiful new chapter of their wedding story. Blackhorse Manor wasn’t part of the original plan, but it turned out to be exactly where this couple was meant to say “I do.”

This is exactly why I always tell my couples that a good planner is worth their weight in gold. Weddings involve a hundred moving pieces, and having someone in your corner who can pivot gracefully when life throws a curveball makes all the difference. Lucy and her team handled this transition with so much calm and confidence that you never would have guessed it wasn’t the plan all along.

Powder Blue, White, and All Things Classic

Jill’s vision for her wedding day was timeless in every sense of the word. Her bridal look was elegant and classic. Her removable lace sleeves gave her two different bridal looks, both incredible! And her color palette of powder blue and white gave the entire day this soft, romantic feel that felt perfectly suited to the start of spring. It’s the kind of palette that photographs beautifully in every kind of light, and paired with Blackhorse Manor’s grounds, it made for some truly gorgeous imagery.

Honoring the Ones Who Couldn’t Be There

Both Jill and Matt have lost their fathers, and one of the most touching parts of their wedding was how they wove that loss into their celebration with so much love and intention. Jill’s brother stepped in to walk her down the aisle, and her mom gave a toast and shared a dance with her that had barely a dry eye in the room. Grief and joy can exist in the same room on a wedding day, and Jill and Matt’s ceremony was a beautiful reminder of that.

The Life of the Party

If Jill brought the elegance, Matt brought the energy. This man is an absolute goofball, and he was the life of the party from start to finish. Between his personality and the live saxophone player they hired to perform alongside the DJ, the dance floor never had a chance to be anything but packed. That saxophone player brought a level of energy to the room I haven’t seen in a while, weaving in and out of the DJ’s set and getting the whole crowd moving.

And of course, no millennial wedding is complete without a full send “Mr. Brightside” moment. Jill and Matt closed out the night with a wild, high energy version of the Killers classic, and it was the perfect way to end a celebration that was equal parts heartfelt and fun.

Golden Hour Magic

We could not have asked for a better sunset for portraits. The sky lit up in these soft golden and pink tones that matched Jill’s powder blue palette beautifully, and it gave us the kind of light photographers dream about. Moments like that remind me why I love shooting spring weddings so much. There’s something about that time of year that just feels full of promise.

Jill and Matt’s wedding was the perfect way to kick off spring wedding season, and I couldn’t be more grateful they trusted me to capture it. Huge thanks to Lucy Donnelly Events for pulling off a seamless (and calm!) pivot when it mattered most, and to Jill and Matt for showing everyone what it looks like to roll with the unexpected and still have the wedding of your dreams.

Congratulations, Jill and Matt! Here’s to many more dance floor moments together.
