Virginia Engagement Photo Locations with Mountain Views

Most couples getting married near the Shenandoah Valley want to feature those beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in their photos. People drive here from all over the coast to see them! Here are 12 engagement session locations in Virginia that will make you and your partner feel on top of the world.

Raven’s Roost Overlook – Blue Ridge Parkway, Lyndhurst, Virginia

Raven’s Roost is one of the most popular locations for mountain top engagement photos in Virginia, and there’s a reason why photographers love it. The overlook is easy to access from the Blue Ridge Parkway and boasts clear views of the entire Shenandoah Valley and surrounding mountain range. The layout of the small park allows for a surprising variety of backdrops, and there’s no better place to catch a Virginia sunset with your sweetheart. You can even get married here!

What to know about Raven’s Roost:

Raven’s Roost is free to use and open to the public. It’s a popular sunset spot and fall foliage locations, so it’s often very crowded. In the peak fall season, many photographers flock here. But most are courteous and share the space! It is off the Parkway, but not part of Shenandoah National Park, so this location does not have an entrance fee (though it is very close to the SNP entrance). It is often quite windy on this overlook, so prepare your hair and outfit accordingly!

Swannanoa Palace – Afton, Virginia

If you’re looking for mountain views with an ethereal vibe, Swannanoa Palace has hauntingly beautiful grounds, ornate architecture, and will make you feel like you’ve entered a fairy tale, or maybe a scene from The Great Gatsby. The castle-like palace sits isolated on top of Afton Mountain and includes a colonnade, lavishly overgrown gardens, and a perfect vista of the surrounding mountains and valleys. As the site is currently unoccupied and closed to the public, we also have the added benefit of complete privacy.

What to know about photo sessions at Swannanoa:

You do have to make a reservation in advance. You can opt for an outdoor only or an indoor/outdoor session. The current rate (10/2025) for an outdoor only session is $130/hour. The grounds are pretty expansive, so an hour may not be enough to capture all the variety you want and explore the property thoroughly. Learn more about photo sessions at Swannanoa.

Sky Meadows State Park – Delaplane, Virginia

Couples planning their engagement session in Northern Virginia can take advantage of this 1900-acre park outside of Winchester that features walking trails, a pond, and endless scenery. I love the variety of backdrops at Sky Meadows! This location provides a historic manor house, wooded areas, and an incredible view of rolling hills and distant mountains.

Castle Hill Cider – Keswick, Virginia

Located just outside of Charlottesville, Virginia, Castle Hill Cider doubles as a wedding venue and is a popular location for engagement sessions! The elegant all-white barn exterior perfectly complements the sunset view of the Blue Ridge Mountains and incredibly well-kept grounds.

What to know about photo sessions at Castle Hill Cider:

You do need to reach out and get permission from the business to have your session there. They charge a location fee of $75 per hour during normal business hours and $150 per hour for sessions outside of their normal business hours. You do not have to be getting married at Castle Hill to use the beautiful property for your engagement session, unlike many other venues around Charlottesville.

King Family Vineyards – Crozet, Virginia

Central Virginia wine lovers adore both King Family’s most popular vintage, the “Crosé,” and their accompanying view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. You can pack a picnic and catch a polo match while you enjoy some of Virginia’s finest wine and most well-kept grounds.

What to know about scheduling your King Family Vineyards engagement session:

You are welcome to have your engagement photos here even if you’re not getting married here! Sessions can be scheduled during their normal business hours and not on weekend/evenings where weddings are going on. They do charge a location fee for their sessions, but it’s quite small. In some cases, they have charged $50 for use of the grounds, and in others they have waived the fee if you do a tasting or eat and drink there before or after your session.

Hazy Mountain Vineyards – Afton, Virginia

Located in Afton, Virginia, Hazy Mountain Vineyards has one of the best overlooks in the valley. They also have unique Italian style architecture, interior space with natural lighting in case of a rainy day, and a villa on site for a quick change of location. The property is expansive, so you’ll feel like you have the place to yourselves even if guests are still enjoying their wine and food. If you want mountain views, Hazy Mountain is a top choice!

Hazy Mountain does require a reservation and a location fee for engagement sessions. The public policy appears to be $150 for professional photography sessions. However, we have a good relationship with the management, and they have sometimes allowed us to trade photos for use of the grounds occasionally. We can inquire for you to see if waiving fees is a possibility.

Devil’s Backbone Basecamp – Nellysford, Virginia

This is not your basic brewery – Devil’s Backbone flaunts an expansive property with brick, plant-lined pathways, a cabin aesthetic, and plenty of unique spaces to enjoy a cold one. The brewery is at the base of the mountain near Wintergreen Resort, and hosts festivals and concerts year-round.

Bold Rock Hard Cider – Nellysford, Virginia

Just north on Route 151 from Devil’s Backbone is Bold Rock Hard Cider, which features walking trails by the river, mountain views from the deck, and a large open field. If you and your fiancé love mountains, cider, and exploring the trails, this is the place for you! Plus, the property is FREE to use for your session!

A couple stands closely together on rocks in a shallow creek at Bold Rock Hard Cider in Nellysford, surrounded by lush green trees and foliage—one of the most romantic engagement session locations in Virginia for sharing an intimate moment in a peaceful, natural setting.

Blackrock Summit – Albemarle County, Virginia

Blackrock Summit is a stop along the Appalachian Trail on the Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. The loop trail takes about 15-25 minutes to walk to the summit. It is an easy hike, but rocky terrain. The views are incredible!

For photographers, you will likely want to pair this with other locations along the Skyline Drive. While the views are incredible, the rocky summit limits your ability to move around much. Your perspectives, framing, etc may be limited. While this location doesn’t charge a fee, you will have to pay to enter Shenandoah National Park. If you have an annual pass for either SNP or National Parks Service in general, that will do!

The many overlooks in Shenandoah National Park & Surrounding Areas

Shenandoah National Park, the Skyline Drive, and the Blue Ridge Parkway are sometimes used interchangeably to reference the many beautiful overlooks along the Blue Ridge mountains. From northern Virginia and Luray area, to central stops in Albemarle County, to the southern border where the Blue Ridge Parkway continues into North Carolina, there are endless opportunities for fall foliage, spring greenery, mountain views, and stunning sunsets.

Shenandoah National Park does charge an entrance fee. However, there are many locations outside of SNP that are free to access that give a similar view. SNP is definitely worth the small fee! If you have an annual pass for National Parks Service, this will get you into Shenandoah as well.

Some of our favorite overlooks are The Point, Hazel Mountain, Mary’s Rock, Timber Ridge, Stony Man, Peaks of Otter, Raven’s Roost, and Humpback Rock.

A man kneels and proposes to a surprised woman in a red dress on a stone platform decorated with colorful flowers, set against trees and mountains—perfect inspiration for engagement session locations in Virginia.

Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards – North Garden, Virginia

Pippin Hill is one of Virginia’s finest wineries and top tier wedding venues. In fact, many of their design elements were created with photography in mind! Couples who choose to have their engagement photos here can take advantage of the vineyard itself, the expansive mountain views, or the well-manicured walkways around the tasting room. If you’re located in Central Virginia and want mountain views with a high-end feel, this is the perfect location for your shoot! However, this is one of the venues that only allows couples getting married there to plan their engagement session on the property.

2024 Update: Pippin Hill now only allows couples getting married at their venue to have their engagement sessions on their property. If you are looking for mountain views and iconic hydrangeas, check out The Farmhouse at Veritas, Big Spring Farm, or Silver Fox Lavender Farm.

Red August Farm – Waynesboro, Virginia

This is the ideal location for couples desiring an up-scale rustic look for their engagement photos. Farm lovers will adore Red August Farm’s classic red barn, sweeping fence rows, and brilliant view of the Shenandoah. The manor house provides a touch of elegance, and couples enjoy the added bonus of privacy for their session, as the property is not open to the public.

Red August Farm is free to use for couples getting married here, but they may charge a fee for others.

Cyrus McCormick Farm – Raphine, Virginia

Situated just between Staunton and Lexington, Virginia is the Cyrus McCormick Farm / Shenandoah Valley Agricultural Research and Extension Center. The property features open fields, a small pond, an old mill, as well as mountain views, of course! This farm is a great location for engaged couples in the Shenandoah Valley seeking a rustic look for their photos.

Silver Fox Lavender Farm – Nellysford, Virginia

This small-but-mighty lavender farm in Nellysford has tons to offer! Schedule your session for June to experience the lavender in peak bloom, take a stroll through the grove of Crepe Myrtle trees, or pack a picnic to enjoy by the pond. The newly-built barn features a massive bridal suite and a light-colored wood interior.

Silver Fox Lavender Farm is free to use for couples getting married here, but they may charge a fee for others.

Massanutten Creek – Luray, Virginia

Luray’s Massanutten Creek is another Shenandoah Valley wedding venue that is also popular for engagement sessions. This 37-acre property located roughly 40 minutes from Harrisonburg features a classic red barn with a silo, a brick manor home, and sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Plan your engagement session for mid-late July to take advantage of the sunflower field!

Massanutten Creek venue is free to use for couples getting married here, but they may charge a fee for others.

Stinson Vineyards – Charlottesville, Virginia

Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia

Although technically just over the state line, Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia is another small town with big variety. About 45-minutes from Winchester, the town is nestled against the mountains where the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers meet, and you can even see parts of West Virginia, Virginia, and Maryland all from one vantage point! Harper’s Ferry is a destination for history buffs, hikers, and water expeditioners alike, and I love any chance to get back to my hometown!

Harper’s Ferry is free to use for your engagement session. You may need to pay for parking in town, which is free if you have a national park’s annual pass.

Garden and Greenhouse Engagement Session Locations

Gardens and greenhouses are perfect for nature lovers who prefer a private, more intimate feel for their session. You and your finance can sneak away to a quiet corner, stroll through floral-lined pathways, or create a picnic to enjoy together during your session! Here are a few of my favorite garden venues for engagement photos in Virginia.

Edith J. Carrier Arboretum – Harrisonburg, Virginia

This arboretum and botanical garden is part of JMU’s campus, but you’d never know from the photos! My clients love the bridge over the reflective pond, the winding pathways, and native plant life in every corner. Even if you aren’t a James Madison alum, this is an idyllic spot for your garden engagement session. Each season brings new looks to the arboretum. It’s meant to be beautiful and colorful all year round!

Showalter’s Orchard & Greenhouse – Timberville, Virginia

Another venue that has a little bit of everything, this family-owned orchard, cidery, farm stay, and event venue has been operating since 1965. The property has an enchanting view of the mountains, a Virginia LOVE sign, a white “hoop house” greenhouse, and an all-glass reception hall. Meander through the groves or enjoy a cider on the lawn with your spouse-to-be!

Showalter’s is free to use for couples getting married here, but they may charge a fee for others.

US Botanic Gardens – Washington, D.C.

A popular engagement session spot for DMV-area couples is the US Botanic Gardens, located on the grounds of the United States Capitol. The park displays several exhibits throughout the year, and even has an indoor conservatory where you can stay warm during the winter months!

2025 Update: The official written policy for the US Botanic Gardens is that photoshoots are not allowed. Many photographers still offer sessions there and publish images taken there, so it appears this is a loosely enforced policy. We personally don’t want to run the risk of your session being interrupted and us being asked to leave, so we will recommend one of the other garden-style location options instead.

Waterperry Farm –  Free Union, Virginia

Just outside of Charlottesville sits Waterperry Farm, which flaunts exquisite gardens, luxurious guest houses, and stunning grounds to explore. My favorite feature is the Victorian greenhouse, but there are so many places to explore! From their website: Swaying hayfields, mature hedges, stone walls, and lichen-covered benches make this a place where unforgettable moments are captured to last forever. Below is a snapshot from their Instagram showing off some of the gardens.

Renting Waterperry Farm for your engagement session requires an advanced reservation and a $200 location fee. We can help you arrange your session there if you wish!

Enid A. Haupt Garden – Smithsonian Gardens – Washington, DC

Sometimes referred to as the Moongate Gardens, this spot is a perfect oasis in DC, offering a variety of gardens, unique architecture, and walking paths. With its central location, you can pair it with other iconic city views. Enid A Haupt Gardens are free to use and do not require a reservation. If the government is closed, the gardens may be closed also.

Maymont Park – Richmond, Virginia

Maymont Park is one of the most popular places in Virginia to take engagement photos. It is a massive property with gardens, waterfront areas, trails, all kinds of seasonal blooms, interesting buildings and architecture, and even some views of mountains. It’s a little bit of everything!

Maymont is free to use and does not require a reservation, but they do close earlier than sunset most days. Check seasonal hours before you schedule your session there!

Carter Mountain Orchard – Charlottesville, Virginia

Are you looking for a location where you can meander through a row of apple trees, munch on a fresh cider donut, and sip some Bold Rock, Carter Mountain has a little bit of everything. The orchard overlooks Charlottesville and Albemarle County, and is another treasured location for Central Virginia sunsets.

Chiles Peach Orchard – Crozet, Virginia

Owned by the same folks as Carter Mountain, Chiles Peach Orchard in nearby Crozet is the ideal location if you want a bright, summer orchard look with beautiful blossoms. In the last few years, they have also planted an expansive zinnia garden that blooms throughout the month of July. Enjoy a frozen cocktail or a cup of peach ice cream after your session!

The Market at Grelen – Somerset, Virginia

This all-in-one European style market has a greenhouse, farm-to-table cafe, a home and garden shop, and a pick-your-own farm. Also serving as a wedding and event venue, couples who choose the Market at Grelen for their engagement session can take advantage of a variety of backdrops with this rare combination of urban elegance and country charm.

During normal business hours, the Market at Grelen is free to use for engagement sessions! You do need to reach out in advance and let the events team know you plan to be there to ensure there are no conflicting events or closures. You can also schedule a session outside of normal business hours for a fee.

Lewis Ginter Botanic Gardens – Richmond, Virginia

Lewis Ginter Botanic Gardens are beautiful in all seasons! While the greenhouse is currently under renovation and not accessible, the rest of the ground are still expansive and provide lots of opportunity for photography. The rose gardens in particular are stunning!

Lewis Ginter does require a fee for professional photo sessions. The fee for members is $50, while non-members pay $150. Learn more about policies at Lewis Ginter.

Historic Locations for Virginia Engagement Photos

Historic areas are perfect for couples who love classic and timeless photos. Virginia is full of beautiful historic locations! Here are a few options to help you choose the perfect location for your downtown engagement session. This list also includes several nearby college campuses that combine historic architecture with a park feel.

Downtown Pedestrian Mall – Charlottesville, Virginia

Known as one of the longest pedestrian malls in the country, Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall features more than 120 shops and 30 restaurants that are almost all locally-owned. Snag a shot in front of the iconic Paramount Theater sign, get cozy in one of the many colorful alleyways, or check out the train station for a more modern look.

Historic Downtown Staunton, Virginia

As a local, one of my favorite places for engagement sessions in the Shenandoah Valley is Historic Downtown Staunton, because it offers so much variety in a walkable area! It doesn’t hurt that I have a studio right in the middle of downtown as a rain plan, and live only ten minutes away. There are historic buildings with white columns, colorful shops and quaint corners, an old train station with stunning architecture, and you can even get some mountain views from a few of my top-secret locations.

James Madison University – Harrisonburg, Virginia

As one of Virginia’s largest and most popular universities, JMU’s campus includes the classic bluestone buildings around the quad, a large fountain, and plenty of open green space with mountain views. If you and your fiance met in college, taking a trip back to your alma mater can be the perfect place to mark your engagement.

Mary Baldwin University – Staunton, Virginia

Mary Baldwin is located in downtown Staunton, and features all-white, stone buildings with large columns and vast steps. I love this location because it feels more like a high-end venue than a college campus, and we can always head downtown afterwards!

Bridgewater College – Bridgewater, Virginia

Located just outside of Harrisonburg, Bridgewater College is a small campus with red brick buildings and a tree-lined quad that lights up with colorful foliage during the fall months. This is a perfect location for couples who want a historic location without the crowds.

University of Virginia – Charlottesville, Virginia

In the heart of Charlottesville in central Virginia, the UVA campus makes a great location for engagement photos. Their stunning Rotunda offers a regal backdrop with lots of interesting architecture, shade or cover if needed, and open space to create beautiful portraits. The nearby UVA gardens offer blocks and blocks of gorgeous landscaping and seasonal blooms. The iconic curved brickwork gating the gardens would be a great backdrop for your portraits!

Historic Old Town Alexandria, Virginia

One of America’s oldest towns, Alexandria marries history and classic architecture with the luxuries of Loudoun County, modern shopping and dining. There’s even a waterfront walkway to add another look to your engagement photos. If you want chic meets classic, downtown Old Town Alexandria is a great location for your Virginia engagement session!

Swannanoa Palace – Afton, Virginia

This location is so versatile I’m listing it in multiple categories! If you and your fiance are into architecture and history, you have to check this place out. Swannanoa Palace has hauntingly beautiful grounds, ornate architecture, and will make you feel like you’ve entered a fairy tale, or maybe a scene from The Great Gatsby. The castle-like palace sits isolated on top of Afton Mountain and includes a colonnade, lavishly overgrown gardens, and a perfect vista of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Engagement Session Location Options at Virginia Breweries, Wineries, and Cideries

Make your engagement session a fun date night at your favorite Virginia winery, brewery, or cidery! If you’re looking for somewhere new to explore with your fiancé, check out a few of my favorite locations below.

Devil’s Backbone Basecamp – Nellysford, Virginia

As mentioned, this is not your basic brewery – Devil’s Backbone flaunts an expansive property with brick, plant-lined pathways, a cabin aesthetic, and plenty of unique spaces to enjoy a cold one or one of their famous Bavarian pretzels. The brewery is at the base of the mountain near Wintergreen Resort, and hosts festivals and concerts year-round.

Parks and Public Grounds in the Shenandoah Valley

Make your engagement session a walk in the park! While there are many parks in Virginia that provide romantic photographic backdrops, here are a few places you may not have heard of that my couples enjoy.

Shenandoah National Park – Elkton, Virginia

You can’t list public photogenic locations in Shenandoah Valley without talking about Shenandoah National Park, of course! SNP is massive and covers a wide portion of Virginia, so we’re not just talking about one location here. Most people think about overlooks and hikes when talking about Shenandoah National Park, and the Blue Ridge Parkway is the scenic drive that runs through the park, stopping by most of the major photo locations. One of my favorite stops along the way is The Point Overlook near Page County, VA. Here’s a snapshot of an engagement session there.

Check out this Shenandoah National Park Blue Ridge Parkway Surprise Proposal

Gypsy Hill Park – Staunton, Virginia

If you’re looking for a nature location in the Shenandoah Valley without the hike, Gypsy Hill Park is the place for you! This hidden gem near downtown Staunton is another one of my go-to spots for engagement sessions. Check out the duck pond, snuggle up under a tree, or stroll through the walking trails.

Blandy Experimental Farm – Virginia State Arboretum – Boyce, Virginia

Another one of my favorite Northern Virginia locations for engagement photos is the Blandy State Arboretum in Clarke County. Arboretums are great for couples who love a natural look without having to hit the trails, and this one in particular is absolutely stunning! There are tree-lined pathways, gardens, and an open field.

Boar’s Head Resort – Charlottesville, Virginia

I love photographing engagements at the Boar’s Head Resort near Charlottesville because it has so much to offer! The resort/community boasts some of the finest homes in Central Virginia, a well-maintained golf course, and a variety of small gardens, ponds, and lush plant life all around. Enjoy an upscale date night at the Mill Room Restaurant after your shoot!

Beaver Creek Reservoir Park – Crozet, Virginia

Want your engagement photos to look like something out of the Notebook? Bring a picnic blanket, canoe, some flowers, and head to Beaver Creek Reservoir! This waterfront location is serene, scenic, and gets great fall foliage! Plus, it’s a free spot to use for your engagement photos.

A couple stands on a wooden dock by a calm lake, surrounded by autumn trees and distant mountains—one of the most picturesque engagement session locations in Virginia. The man twirls the woman in her red dress as they dance under a bright sky.

Classic Washington DC Engagement Session Locations

In addition to many of the public parks, downtown and street locations, here are some iconic DC locations to consider. With the exception of the National Cathedral, these locations are all free to use for your engagement session provided your session doesn’t interfere with normal foot traffic, and that we keep equipment to a minimum (no tripods, external flash stands, etc). Due to the 2024 EXPLORE act, permits are no longer required for many locations under the National Parks Service.

The Jefferson Memorial

Although many memorials along the national mall could be highlighted here, the Jefferson is a favorite of mine! It is generally less crowded than the Lincoln memorial, but allows for very similar photos and has a great view of the Washington Monument and waterfront in the background.

The exterior and rooftop of the Kennedy Center provide great views of DC, high key portrait locations, and a nice free place to take photos. In fall of 2025, the willow trees were removed due to being diseased, and are rumored to be replaced in spring 2026.

The National Cathedral – Bishop’s Garden

Engagement sessions at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. are popular for their stunning Gothic architecture and serene gardens, but require a permit that can fill up quickly, so it’s recommended to book at least two months in advance. The cathedral grounds offer a variety of picturesque settings, including ornate details, staircases, pathways, and gardens, making it an ideal location for capturing timeless and romantic photos. The gardens are expansive, so we could spend a ton of time here! It’s definitely possible to do an outfit change and have two very different looks in this one convenient location. Given the immaculate landscapes and variety of location options here, it’s well worth the fee for the permit. We are happy to help with the permitting process. For 2025, the current fee is $250 for permits here.

The Library of Congress

Engagement sessions at the Library of Congress are popular for their stunning architecture, historical ambiance, and grand hallways, which provide a timeless backdrop for photos. Key tips for planning a session include arriving early, ideally before 10 a.m. on weekends, to avoid crowds and get softer light, and considering both the inside of the Thomas Jefferson Building and the exterior grounds for different looks. While a permit may not be required for this type of session, it’s wise to confirm the latest rules before your shoot.

National Portrait Gallery

Engagement sessions at the National Portrait Gallery are a popular choice for their stunning architecture and art-filled backdrops. To plan one, photographers advise arriving early to avoid crowds, choosing outfits that complement the space, and using the gallery’s natural light and unique features like the atrium and grand staircases. While flash photography is typically discouraged without a permit, the museum generally allows photography without one, though you may need to wait for crowds to clear.

If the government is closed, the gardens may be closed also.

Epic Destinations across Virginia for your Engagement Session!

Swannanoa Palace – Afton, Virginia

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – Swannanoa is one of the most unique sites in Virginia! The castle-like atmosphere will give you jaw-dropping photos that will stun your friends and family. The castle-like palace sits isolated on top of Afton Mountain and includes a colonnade, lavishly overgrown gardens, and a perfect vista of the surrounding mountains and valleys. As the site is currently unoccupied and closed to the public, we also have the added benefit of complete privacy.

Sky Meadows State Park – Delaplane, Virginia

Couples planning their engagement session in Northern Virginia can take advantage of this 1900-acre park outside of Winchester. Sky Meadows State Park features walking trails, a pond, and endless scenery. I love the variety of backdrops this location provides, including a historic manor house, wooded areas, and an incredible view of rolling hills and distant mountains.

Historic Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia

Although technically just over the state line, Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia is another small town with big variety. About 45-minutes from Winchester, the town is nestled against the mountains where the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers meet, and you can even see parts of West Virginia, Virginia, and Maryland all from one vantage point! Harper’s Ferry is a destination for history buffs, hikers, and water expeditioners alike, and I love any chance to get back to my hometown!

The waterfall at the end is worth it. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, take a jump off the waterfall into the swimming hole below!

FREE Places to take engagement photos in Virginia

While many of these locations are mentioned in the article above, I’m rounding up all my favorite free spots for your convenience here! Take a look at some of the best engagement session locations in Virginia that don’t charge a fee.

A landscaped park, perfect for engagement session locations in Virginia, features blossoming pink trees, a large green-leaved tree, wooden fences, a display board, and a paved path with lush greenery and rocks in the background.

The Jefferson Memorial

Although many memorials along the national mall could be highlighted here, the Jefferson is a favorite of mine! It is generally less crowded than the Lincoln memorial, but allows for very similar photos and has a great view of the Washington Monument and waterfront in the background.
