Amina and Darren: A Love Story Worth the Wait | Rainy May Lexington Wedding

Some love stories take time to unfold, and Amina and Darren’s is one of the most beautiful examples of that. After a year of anticipation following their postponement from May of 2025, they finally said their vows at The Seclusion in Lexington, Virginia on a rainy May day. It was worth every single day of the wait.

A wedding in the mountains

When Amina and Darren first planned their wedding day, they envisioned celebrating surrounded by the mountain views that mean so much to them. They had gotten engaged in Colorado, a place they had visited together multiple times while dating. During one of those trips, Amina was actually expecting a proposal, but the magic didn’t happen quite then. Darren wasn’t giving up though. He brought her back to those same Colorado mountains to ask her to marry him, and she said yes. Those mountain moments became the heartbeat of their wedding vision.

When life threw them a curveball and they needed to postpone, Darren was determined to make sure Amina had her princess day. He encouraged her to dream big, to hire a wedding planner, and to celebrate herself fully. That kind of love and support made all the difference.

The Seclusion in Lexington, Virginia became the perfect wedding venue choice. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains with views that rival the Colorado peaks they love, the venue feels like a retreat tucked away from the rest of the world. It was exactly the kind of intimate, mountain surrounded setting they had always envisioned. [ PS – view more wedding venues with mountain views here!]

A rainy spring wedding day

On their wedding day, Mother Nature had other plans. Rain came down steadily, and the couple made a graceful decision to move their ceremony inside. The Seclusion’s team, Boundless Love Events, and Florals by Kimberly worked magic, hanging lush greenery throughout the space and filling it with candlelight and warmth. What could have felt disappointing instead felt intimate and intentional.

And here’s what really stood out to me about Amina and Darren: they weren’t stressed about the change of plans at all. They were just excited to get married. Before the ceremony, they were casually choosing their processional songs, totally flexible and go with the flow. They didn’t have a long list of photo requests for me either. They just wanted to celebrate with the people they love most.

A family-focused wedding

Her brother walked Amina down the aisle, and you could see how proud he was of her. Amina’s family immigrated from Russia, and that heritage was woven beautifully throughout the day. During the reception, her brother led everyone in a Russian tradition: to end the toast with saying “Горько!” (pronounced GOR-ka, meaning “bitter”). This was the cue for the newlyweds to kiss and make the “bitterness” of the drinks sweet, while guests count the duration of the kiss! As the chant grew louder and louder around the room, Amina and Darren shared a kiss while their loved ones stood and cheered around them. I got to capture that moment, and it is one of my absolute favorites from the day. The joy, the tradition, the community all in one frame.

Both of their children were there to witness it all. Amina’s daughters and Darren’s sons stood beside them, celebrating this new chapter as a blended family. Darren’s oldest son is even planning his own wedding now, and having the whole family together celebrating this love felt extra special.

A collaborative wedding vendor team

I also have to give a huge shout out to the vendor team that made the day everything it was. Kenya and the Boundless Love Events team were absolutely incredible. They rolled with every last minute detail, pivoted seamlessly when the rain plan changed, and created a timeline that kept everything flowing beautifully. The Seclusion itself is always such a gracious host, and combined with Boundless Love Events’ expertise, the space was transformed into something truly magical. The florist, Florals by Kimberly, also deserves major credit. They draped the venue in gorgeous greenery and set the most beautiful candlelit atmosphere, but what really caught my eye were the details they brought to Amina’s bridal bouquet. They incorporated her favorite color, lavender, alongside stunning white orchids that felt so bridal and romantic. Those blooms were absolutely stunning to photograph during her bridal detail session. And here’s a sweet little behind the scenes moment: just before Amina walked down the aisle, we talked about preserving her bouquet. We placed the order right there at the wedding, and I got to take her flowers home and deliver them to the presser so she could keep that beautiful piece of her day forever.

What I loved most about photographing Amina and Darren’s wedding is that the majority of my photos from the day are candid moments. They weren’t focused on posing for portraits or orchestrating every shot. They genuinely just wanted to celebrate and have a good time with the people they love. And celebrate they did. The dance floor was packed all night long. Level Up Entertainment brought the energy, with DJ Gabriel (Gbaby) leading the charge. Even with a broken foot, Gabriel showed up, and his brother came along to help load in and out gear and ended up being a backup dancer all evening, hyping everyone up and keeping the party going. The show must go on! And these wedding vendors were committed!

Wrapping up the perfect wedding day

As the night wound down and Amina and Darren made their sparkler exit, I captured a moment that perfectly summed up the entire day. Amina turned around and made a heart with her hands toward all of her friends and family, radiating pure joy, before she waved and hopped in the car.

That is what their wedding was about. Genuine love, laughter, and a whole lot of dancing with the people who matter most. Amina and Darren, thank you for letting me be part of your story. It was an absolute joy to photograph.

PS – They also left their guests with the cutest hangover kits by the front door. They seriously thought of everything!
