How to Plan a Wedding In 6 Months

Planning a wedding in just six months might feel like a whirlwind, but with careful planning and prompt decision-making, it can be a beautifully memorable experience. Some couples choose to do a shorter engagement to avoid wedding stress over a long period of time, while others are just excited to be married soon! Regardless of your motives, a short engagement is certainly possible. Here in Virginia, we have so many wonderful venues and vendors that can still accommodate same-year bookings. Here’s a month-by-month breakdown to help you stay on track and make your dream day a reality within a six month planning period.

Let’s Plan your Virginia Wedding in Under 6 Months!

Month 1: How to start planning your Wedding

  1. Set Your Budget and Begin Your Guest List
    • Collaborate on Budgeting: Gather all stakeholders to set a clear, realistic budget, prioritizing elements most important to you.
    • Define Priorities: During a private discussion, decide on your top three must-haves. For example, you might focus on securing an exceptional wedding photographer, a scenic venue, and a caterer offering dishes that evoke family traditions.
    • Draft Your Guest List: Be strategic with invites; limit the list to those closest to you to maintain intimacy and manage expenses.
  2. Select a Venue and Lock in Your Date
    • Venue Research: Explore venues offering all-inclusive packages to simplify logistics. These packages often include essentials like setup and teardown.
    • Flexible Dates: Opt for off-peak days or seasons to increase availability and potentially lower costs.
    • Pro Tip: If you’re hiring a wedding planner, secure them first! They will know the local venues that check off your needs, are in budget, and may have availability. If you’re not sure you want to hire a planner yet but need some advice, a few planners offer paid consultation where they’ll work with you for a few hours on a specific goal, like narrowing a proposed venue list.
  3. Book Key Vendors
    • Prioritize vendors such as the coordinator, caterer, photographer/videographer, entertainment, florist, officiant, and transportation services to avoid last-minute disappointments. I recommend starting with your wedding planner. Here’s our favorite Virginia wedding planners and coordinators!
    • Extremely popular vendors, luxury service providers, and highest rated vendors book up typically close to a year in advance. You will see a lot of marketing around “almost fully booked” and “Don’t miss out!” Don’t let that stress you out. There are still professional, incredible vendors available within 6 months. It might just take inquiring with a few more companies to find the right fits. As a wedding photographer, about 30% of my couples hire me less than 8 months before their wedding. You’ve got this!
  4. Choose Your Wedding Attire
    • Consider off-the-rack options or rush services for bridal and bridal party outfits to align with your timeline.
