November is #NationalAdoptionMonth , and also a season where many families are looking to take their annual photos for Christmas cards. Want to use your family session to make a difference this fall? Book a mini session with me in November, and I will donate 30% to Maryland Adoption Resource Exchange.
When families adopt, there are no baby showers or registries. In-laws and mothers aren’t rushing over to help the new mom and child adjust. There are no newborn sessions, and often families aren’t allowed to share photos of their child online for a while. The overwhelming majority of domestic adoptions are of children who are over 10 years old. New adoptive parents face the challenge of bonding with their child – who may not want to call them “mom” and “dad” (or, not right away), may push them to see what they can get away with in the new home, and will need lots of love and patience to adjust to their new family.
Adoptive parenting can be incredibly lonely. Friends and family may not understand the couple’s reasons for choosing adoption, and the parenting challenges are different from the challenges of new biological parents. It’s a lonely and noble journey, and it’s important for us all to recognize that those who are called to be adoptive parents are filling a great need in our society, and blessing a child with a life of opportunity they wouldn’t have otherwise had. While they chose to become parents in a different way, they are in no way less parents than birth parents. They are brave, and they are heroes.
I am so inspired by watching the adoption journey of several of my friends right now. I’ve always known that adoption is going to be a part of my future and my family’s future, and I am so grateful for those who are sharing about their experiences and being open about the path to adoption (both in general and for National Adoption Month). It can be a tough subject to be transparent about – it’s an emotional ride. But I’m so glad I have these stories to encourage me, and to be a resource for others who are starting their own adoption journey. Bless you!
So, for the month of November, all my family sessions are going to help bring resources and education to adoptive parents in the state of Maryland. 30% of the proceeds will be donated to the Maryland Adoption Resource Exchange. If you are thinking about having family portraits done this fall, then book with me and make an impact with your family session.
