Guide to Getting Married at the University of Virginia Gardens

If you’re dreaming of an intimate outdoor wedding surrounded by historic brick, manicured greenery, and the kind of charm that feels straight out of a college love story, the University of Virginia Gardens might be exactly what you’re looking for.

Tucked behind the pavilions on the Lawn at UVA in Charlottesville, these walled gardens offer a private, peaceful setting right in the heart of campus. For alumni especially, it’s one of the most sentimental places you can say your vows. This space is best suited for couples planning a relaxed, outdoor ceremony — particularly those with ties to UVA who want to celebrate their history here.

Why Couples Love Weddings at the University of Virginia Gardens

There’s something incredibly meaningful about getting married on the same campus where you met, studied, or built lifelong friendships.

Couples are drawn to the Gardens for:

  • 🌿 Beautifully maintained landscaping
  • 🧡 Deep sentimental value for alumni
  • 🤍 A private, tucked-away ceremony space
  • 💰 A cost-effective option in Charlottesville
  • 🌸 Multiple gardens with completely different aesthetics

One thing that surprises people? There isn’t just one garden — there are several, and each feels entirely different. And while this isn’t a full ceremony + reception venue, many couples host their ceremony (and sometimes cocktail hour) here before heading elsewhere for their reception.

UVA Garden Wedding Cost

One of the most common questions couples ask is: How much does a UVA garden wedding cost?

There is no rental fee to reserve one of the Gardens for your wedding ceremony. However, you must be affiliated with UVA, or someone with an affiliation must reserve the garden on your behalf. Because of that requirement, this venue is especially popular with alumni and faculty.

It’s one of the most cost-effective ceremony locations in Charlottesville, but access is limited to the UVA community.

Can You Get Married on the UVA Lawn?

Short answer: no.

You cannot get married directly on the Lawn. However, you can get married in several of the surrounding Gardens, just steps away from it.

From some gardens, you can practically see the Lawn. Many couples choose to hold their ceremony in one of the approved Gardens and then take portraits on the Lawn and near the Rotunda afterward, so you still get that iconic UVA look in your photos.

Choosing the Right Garden

While Garden I is one of the most popular options, largely because of its proximity to the UVA Chapel, shuttle drop-off locations, and the Rotunda, it’s important to know what you’re getting.

Garden I is essentially an open square. It receives a lot of direct sun and has less landscaping variety compared to some of the other gardens. If you’re prioritizing soft light and more visual texture in your ceremony backdrop, I strongly recommend touring Gardens II, V, VIII, IX, and X — ideally at the exact time of day you plan to hold your ceremony.

Light changes everything in these spaces.

University of Virginia Wedding Ceremony-Only Venue

The Gardens are most commonly used for:

  • Ceremony only
  • Ceremony + cocktail hour

From there, couples transition to a separate reception venue.

Popular reception locations in Charlottesville include:

This ceremony-only format works beautifully, it just requires intentional timeline planning.

UVA Wedding Parking: What to Know

Parking at UVA is extremely tricky and limited.

There is no dedicated parking at the Gardens. Guests may use standard employee or student lots (with permits or paid access), but cars parked in loading zones are subject to ticketing and towing. Most couples utilize shuttle services from their hotel blocks, which I highly recommend.

Also — check the UVA Athletics schedule before finalizing your date. Homecoming weekends and major football games can significantly impact traffic, hotel availability, and overall logistics.

Best Seasons for a UVA Garden Wedding

The Gardens are beautiful year-round, but two seasons truly shine:

🌸 Spring — Incredible blooms and lush landscaping
🍁 Fall — Classic Virginia foliage across the entire campus

Both seasons offer stunning backdrops and rich color in photos.

Best Photo Spots at the University of Virginia Gardens

This venue offers incredible variety within walking distance.

Inside the Gardens

Brick walls create natural framing, and the landscaping adds texture and depth. Some gardens are in full sun most of the day, while others provide better shade and softer light.

Always check the ceremony light before committing.

The Lawn + Rotunda

Portraits here are a must for many UVA couples. The architecture instantly anchors your photos in Charlottesville history.

Around the Colonnade Club

Classic brick, arches, and transitional spaces make this area a beautiful complement to the gardens.

Be prepared to walk and to work around curious campus foot traffic. There aren’t many fully private areas during the academic year.

Timeline Tips for a UVA Gardens Wedding

Because this is typically a ceremony-only venue, your timeline will need extra buffer compared to an all-in-one location.

Plan for:

  • Getting ready off-site
  • Travel time between venues
  • Shuttle unloading delays
  • Walking time across campus
  • Guest transition time

In my experience, couples often need an additional hour to hour and a half of photography coverage to account for these logistics, compared to having your entire wedding day at one venue.

It’s absolutely manageable; it just needs thoughtful planning.

Weather Plan: What Happens If It Rains?

There is no built-in rain plan within the Gardens unless you are also using the Colonnade Club.

Most couples:

  • Plan for umbrellas during light rain
  • Arrange early access to their reception venue in case of heavy rain

Since tents are not permitted and there’s no indoor backup on-site, having a clear weather plan is essential.

From a Photographer’s Perspective

I love photographing here because the landscaping is consistently beautiful and well maintained. The combination of garden greenery, historic brick, and iconic campus architecture gives you so much creative flexibility.

You could photograph a dozen weddings here and have each one look completely different.

One of my favorite moments was during Chloe and Jon’s wedding when we ran into (former) UVA basketball coach Tony Bennett. He graciously stopped for a photo with them. And, Chloe’s hair was UVA orange at the time! It was such a uniquely UVA moment you simply couldn’t recreate anywhere else.

If you’re planning a wedding here: build in extra time and wear comfortable shoes. You’ll walk a lot, but the photos are worth it.
