As a wedding photographer based in Central Virginia, I’ve had the joy of capturing love stories in some truly breathtaking outdoor settings. Between Charlottesville and Richmond, this region is home to some of the most picturesque garden wedding venues in the state—perfect for couples who want to be surrounded by natural beauty on their wedding day. From the historic tiered gardens tucked behind the University of Virginia’s Rotunda to the lush, European-inspired grounds of Maymont Park in Richmond, these venues offer timeless charm, elegant backdrops, and endless photo opportunities. In this post, I’m sharing my favorite garden venues that bring romance and scenery together in the heart of Virginia.
The Market at Grelen
Located just outside of Charlottesville, The Market at Grelen sits on a 1000-acre tree nursery, boasting meticulous design, lush elegance, and exceptional customer service. This incredibly stunning venue provides the quaint charm of a greenhouse with an elevated feel. The venue cost ranges from $6500 – $15,500 depending on the season and day of the week, and includes various amenities such as tables and chairs, access to the property for engagement photos, and an on-site cottage for getting ready on the wedding day.
The Gardens at Waterperry Farm
Just outside of Charlottesville sits Waterperry Farm, which flaunts exquisite gardens, luxurious guest houses, and stunning grounds to explore. My favorite feature is the Victorian greenhouse, but there are so many places to explore! Currently, Waterperry Farm is only available for small elopement ceremonies. From their website: Swaying hayfields, mature hedges, stone walls, and lichen-covered benches make this a place where unforgettable moments are captured to last forever.
Some people also use the property for beautiful engagement photos, if a wedding there isn’t the right fit. Renting Waterperry Farm for your engagement session requires an advanced reservation and a $200 location fee. We can help you arrange your session there if you wish!
UVA Gardens
Are you and your spouse-to-be loyal Wahoos? Consider the University of Virginia’s historic gardens for your wedding ceremony! Couples getting married in the University of Virginia Gardens also enjoy access to some of the grounds’ most picturesque locations, including the Rotunda, colonnade, and serpentine walls for their wedding portraits. The gardens can seat between 50 – 300 people; please note that amplified sound is not permitted.
Pharsalia
Pharsalia is a truly magical wedding venue, with some of Virginia’s best mountain views, lush and naturalistic landscaping, and an on-site flower farm. Couples getting married at Pharsalia enjoy exclusive access to the venue on their wedding weekend, a large sailcloth tent that is included in the rental cost, and access to various outbuildings and suites. The cost to rent Pharsalia is between $7000 – $13,500 depending on guest count.
The Forum Hotel
Kimpton The Forum Hotel in Charlottesville, Virginia boasts a serene and stylish setting for your wedding of up to 270 guests. The Forum Hotel offers an enchanting blend of interior and outdoor spaces, including a large ballroom, the lawn, and the forum amphitheater, as well as on-site gourmet catering. Couples getting married at Kimpton The Forum Hotel enjoy complimentary on-site accommodations for the wedding night and a continental breakfast the morning after. Contact the venue directly for pricing.
Meadowlark Botanical Gardens – The Atrium
Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Northern Virginia offers a dreamy, nature-filled setting for weddings, centered around its stunning glass-enclosed Atrium. With lush tropical plants, twinkle-lit trees, and floor-to-ceiling windows, the space is beautiful year-round and flooded with natural light—perfect for romantic photos. Couples can exchange vows indoors or outside on the terrace, with access to serene lakes, wooded paths, and hidden garden spots for portraits. The Atrium accommodates up to 230 seated guests (or 300 standing) for receptions, offering a seamless flow for indoor ceremonies or celebrations. Just outside, a spacious terrace overlooks enchanting gardens, providing the flexibility to host your ceremony al fresco or mingle under the open sky. Beyond the Atrium, the estate unfolds with romantic photo locations—from charming gazebos on Lake Caroline and elevated hillside pavilions to the tranquil Korean Bell Garden and Lilac Pavilion—all offering unique flairs for portraits It’s a one-of-a-kind venue that blends elegance with the peaceful beauty of nature.
The Clifton Inn
If you and your fiancé are looking for a unique wedding venue in Virginia that is not a “farm” or “barn” venue, The Clifton Inn may be for you! This boutique hotel situated on 100 acres is located only minutes from downtown Charlottesville and features an elegant manor house, garden cottages, and an award-winning on-site restaurant. The Clifton Inn offers couples the option to book their venue for day-of or full weekend events. The inn itself can sleep up to 39, with space for up to 300 reception guests. Although not typically labeled a garden venue, The Clifton has a “secret garden” section of the property and impeccable landscaping that lends itself to garden themes so well!
